HOOGHLY RIVER SWIM, WEST BENGAL
The River Hooghly Approximately 260kilometer (160 mi) of the Ganges River in West Bengal, India, is Bhagirathi-Hooghly, initially and in local languages known as’ Ganga, ‘and also Kati-Ganga. The Ganges is divided into Padma and Ganga near Murshidabad, Gina. There is another artificial fork of the River upstream in Farakka today. The Padma flows to Bangladesh in the east, while the Ganga flows to West Bengal in the south. The River passes through Rarh, West Bengal’s lower Deltaic districts, and Bengal’s Bay. The top of the River is Bhagirathi, while the bottom riparian zone is Hooghly. Mayurakshi, Jalangi, Ajay, Damodar, Rupnarayan, and Haldi are the main rivers in the Bhagirathi-Hooghly, apart from the Ganges. About Event
After the 26/11/2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai, all open water swimming events in the Arabian sea were stopped. Prabhat was ready to swim marathon swimming event. According to his coach Shri Kishor Patil, he was having patience required for open water swimming in substantial water bodies.
We decided to travel to W.B. for a swimming event in the Hoogly river. It was open water swimming completion organized by the Ahiritola youth club of Kolkata at the National level. Prabhat was the youngest participant, just 12yrs & 3month old.
He started his open water swim race at the national level securing 8th place in the competition. In cold conditions, the air temperature was 120c.
